Counselling Services in Brisbane South West (Sherwood)
As part of normal life we all have to face challenges from time to time. Most of the time we are able to handle our challenges quite successfully on our own, or perhaps with the help of our partner, a family member, or a friend, but sometimes we need assistance from someone with professional expertise. For health problems, we consult a medical doctor or some other health professional. For financial problems, we consult the bank manager or a financial planner. For vehicle problems, we consult a mechanic or a car yard. And when our challenges are of a personal nature, we consult a counsellor or maybe a life coach.
In the past, seeking professional help to deal with personal issues used to be seen as a sign of weakness. But in modern times it is rather seen as a sign of wisdom – we simply can’t be experts on everything ourselves, and if someone else has the tools and knows how to use them, why not take advantage of that?
Personal & couples counselling, Brisbane Southside (West) - in Sherwood clinic, over the phone, or online
I have been in private practice, providing personal counselling, relationship counselling and marriage counselling in Brisbane for more than twenty years by now. The exact content of the counselling sessions is of course always determined by each individual client’s or couple’s needs. Yet, there are common elements that form the foundation of my counselling approach, like genuine connection, understanding communication, personal and interpersonal awareness, mindfulness and a delicate balance of caring presence and supportive challenging.
Most of my couples counselling in Brisbane is done at my Sherwood clinic, face to face, either with one person, with a couple, or even in a group setting, for people who choose that option. I do however also offer telephone & online counselling for people who live in remote areas or who prefer telephone or online counselling for other reasons.
Counselling or Life Coaching?
Depending on the nature of a personal problem and where you are at in the process of overcoming it, you may need individual counselling more so than personal life coaching, or vice versa. Oftentimes the process starts out as counselling, and down the track turns into life coaching, when you feel stronger and your confidence and knowledge on how to tackle your challenges has improved.
Similarly, if you are a couple who are facing challenges in your relationship, you may need marriage counselling or relationship counselling, or you may be going quite well and only want access to more strategies and tools, and coaching in how to use them to make your relationship even more satisfying. Here too, the process often starts as couples counselling, and down the track transforms into relationship coaching.
If you are unsure of which alternative is for you, counselling or coaching, that’s okay – we’ll figure it out together at your first appointment! You can also read more about the similarities and differences between life coaching and counselling in the article "Life Coaching vs. Counselling."
