Online dating sites perpetuate an implicit form of ageism that oftentimes serves neither the ones searching nor the ones hoping to be found. By confusing a person’s nominal age with their functional age, these sites introduce unnecessary biases that often make finding the right match more difficult than it needs to be. While establishing someone’s functional age is not as straightforward as establishing their nominal age, online dating sites may need to look into other options than simply asking their members for an age number.
